Increasing Disorder In A Dining Table
This drawing by architects Diller + Scofidio, titled Increasing Disorder In A Dining Table, documents the progression of a meal from a perfectly laid table, through a motion-trace palimpsest of the dinner party in action, to the wreckage of dirty dishes and crumpled napkins that confronts the host(s) after the last guest has departed. Or the other way round, if you read from left to right…[via ediblegeography]

Predicting Tsunamis: Chile's Massive Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake
With a computer graphic showing the possible path of tsunami waves from an earthquake in Chile, Dr. Charles McCreery speaks on the phone at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. The State of Hawaii is under a tsunami warning after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake rattled Chile today.Whenever there is an earthquake, I relate. I experienced a magnitude 7.6 quake when in Taiwan. Here are the facts. That was bad, Chile's 8.8 is INTENSE. It was felt all the way over in Japan. As usual "The Big Picture" has some amazing photos. Click here. -

Location: Tracking Viral Phenomena Before and After Computing
This is way before computers. Before Sense Networks.A variant of the original map drawn by Dr. John Snow (1813-1858), a British physician who is one of the founders of medical epidemiology, showing cases of cholera in the London epidemics of 1854, clustered around the locations of water pumps.By talking to local residents, he identified the source of the outbreak as the public water pump on Broad Street.Snow later used a spot map to illustrate how cases of cholera were centred around the pump. He also made a solid use of statistics to illustrate the connection between the quality of the source of water and cholera cases. He showed that the Southwark and Vauxhall Waterworks Company was taking water from sewage-polluted sections of the Thames and delivering the water to homes with an increased incidence of cholera. Snow's study was a major event in the history of public health, and can be regarded as the founding event of the science of epidemiology. [via wikipedia]This is after. Now just imagine the power of mobile. Here's an example: geo-medicine. -

Curation: The "Aha" Ability
Maria Popova of Brain-Pickings recently interviewed the founding hosts of CurrentTV. They had some interesting thoughts regarding curation.Max: Curators are essential because our world is becoming increasingly more digitized and information is everywhere. Content is being consumed faster and with greater voracity than ever before. However, not all of this information is deserving of our valuable attention spans and it’s up to us to share what is worth taking note of — be it a noble cause, a perspective, a gorgeous song, a beautiful film, the latest research, etc. Since everyone basically becomes a curator, or has the power to curate because of the way social networks are designed, it’s up to the individual to decide how best to use that platform — or whether to use it at all. Jason: The job of the curator is to act as a barometer of wow. Good curators have an innate “aha” ability to be easily moved, enthralled and inspired by content that is magnificently curious. They have their eyes unusually peeled and the best of them never fail to find spine-tingling content. Curation of wow is key to having meaningful experiences when consuming information.

Location: Boringness and Predictability Help Map Human Mobility
Former Flickr employee and geo-geek Aaron Cope has been experimenting with Foursquare check-in data, plugging it into piratemaps. The results, seen above, visualize his individual behavior and social network's stomping ground. It looks like a more detailed version of another Foursquare app, Where Do You Go.
